If you are asking about wiring in conformance with the Us National Electrical Code, 15 amp receptacles are ofttimes used with 12 gauge wire. The only problem may be in using the quick-connect characteristic where you lot just stick the wire in a pigsty and it is automatically defenseless and retained. Those are only for 14 approximate wire. With 12 estimate, you need to utilize the screw terminals. You tin can use 15 amp outlets on either 15 or 20 amp circuits. 12 gauge wire is the minimum for 20 amp circuits. xiv judge wire is the minimum for 15 amp circuits. I concur with what has been said previously. Yet, there is an exception non mentioned: If a 20 amp circuit has only i simplex outlet, that outlet must exist a 20 amp outlet. A simplex outlet is typically used for a defended circuit, which serves only ane appliance.
210.21 (B)(1) Single Receptacle on an Individual Co-operative Circuit.
A single receptacle installed on an private branch circuit shall accept an ampere rating non less than that of the branch circuit.

As well, don't underestimate the difficulty of working with the stiffness of solid AWG12 inside the confines of a typical outlet or switch box. I one time had the idea that I would use it exclusively for new wiring, just to be bourgeois, simply I rapidly gave upwardly on that idea after doing a few circuits with it.

@Dave Tweed; I had that experience, but it was my blood brother who decided to run AWG12 everywhere and go out the device wiring to me.

Just don't use the "backstab" connectors, whether using xv or 20 amp outlets on 12 or 14 gauge wire. They only clamp with a thin spring of metal that will work well for a limited fourth dimension. Once they start to work loose, they're a potential source of fire-starting arcs. If it's a straight in connection that is so screwed downwards, those are good (and much easier than making the loop in the terminate of the wire).
